If we examine the lives of men and women who God used in the past and what happened because of them, we will discover that beside faith, they also had courage to obey God. Without courage, faith is ineffective and unprofitable; without courage, faith is dead. As Apostle James said, “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?” James 2:14
‘Have work’ means to have an attitude of courage towards what we believe. Forty day after Moses sent scout to the land of Canaan, they returned and revealed to him, to Aaron and to all the congregation of Israel what they had seen, saying,
"We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan." Numbers 13:27-29
This was the land God had promised the people of Israel. The land was indeed flowing with milk and honey, but humanly speaking, it was almost impossible for the Israelites to conquer because it was inhabited by powerful men. This situation scared ten of the twelve scouts who had spied out the land, and their report discourage the rest of the Israelites from continuing journey into the Promised Land.
That is exactly how cowards act. Not only do they give up, they spread the same spirit of cowardice to others. This passage goes on to say,
“Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it." But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we." And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight." Numbers 13:30-33
Caleb and Joshua encourage the people to take possession of the land by faith, but the other spies subtly spread their cowardly faith. They gave a negative report based on what they had seen with their natural eyes, which could only see the difficulties.
